The Salem Fire Protection District reports heavy damage to a car and hay baler in separate Saturday afternoon fires.

Fire officials say Brandon Garrison of Salem was driving on West Boone Street when his car began having mechanical problems and he pulled it into the parking lot of the Trinity United Methodist Church.  The engine compartment then burst into flames and was fully engulfed in flames upon the fire department’s arrival.   They were able to confine the fire to the engine area.   There were no injuries.   The fire call came in at 2:28 Saturday afternoon.

Salem Firemen were called to the hay baler on fire in the 33-hundred block of Hotze Road.   The baler apparently had a mechanical issue and a bale of hay inside the baler caught fire.   The baler sustained heavy damage.  The tractor pulling the baler was detached and was not damaged.  The bailer was owned by Roy Landers of Salem.  The fire call came in at five Saturday evening.
